i have a 1995 ford explorer 180000 it seemed to be running ok and the it seems like the transmission went out but when it stoped the noise sounded like it came from the middle of the car it still runs and it if u try to go into drive it kinda starts to go but doesnt could it maybe be something to do with the 4 wheel drive

It is most likely a trans. issue, or linkage to trans.

Check trans. fluid level, and inspect shift linkage from shifter to trans. Look for binding cable, broken cable brackets.
