I have a 1994 ford explorer and the 4x4 does not seem to work.I was told that changing the hubs would take care of the problem. My question to you is, if that takes care of the problem what does that have to do with the 4x4?

The autolock hubs go out. They do not have turning switches to engage the hubs. You shift in the cab and the hubs engage. They are expensive to replace but putting it manual hubs that you have to engage by stepping outside are much cheaper. Basically the front wheels turn freely until the hub on each side locks in the drive mechanism. Yours did it automatically when you shifted.
