The explorer's gas mileage has dropped in half in the last two months. The tail pipe went from gray to black on the inside. Also it has a slight suction and miss sounding noise from the tail pipe. Have tried a oil detergent for a possible stuck intake valve but after 20 miles after using it, don't think it worked. a little loss of power and a littel jerky when driving

It sounds like you have a plugged catylatic converter based on the sounds from the exhaust. Disconnect it to see if you regain the power. Also, let me know if the check engine light is on.

yes the engine light goes on at random times while driving and goes off after about ten seconds. Also too old for diagnostic terminal under dash.
