00 EXPEDTION TRANNY NOISE

2000 Ford Expedition

My 00 Expedition(4.6L) automatic transmission is making a high pitched roaring noise at start up briefly and during hard acceleration or heavy load. It is worse when cold and makes the noise even under lighter loads until it warms up. The other day I was trying to get it to make the noise with the parking brake set and my foot on the brake to simulate a load and I could not get it to make this noise and while driving it after that test the noise seemed to have disappeared. The transmission pulls fine and there is no noticeable slip occuring. I am thinking it is maybe the front pump making this noise but I would appreciate any and all input as I've never fooled with auomatic transmissions before. If a rebuild is necessary, has anyone shopped it to see if it is worthwhile to order a reman tranny from somewhere and install it yourself versus the local shops. My company just sent an E350 van transmission in for rebuild and it cost over $2000.00 so it has me a little concerned because I just painted this vehicle with hopes of keeping it a few more years. Any help or advise would be appreciated.
