Brake repair - front and rear brakes

Does anyone have a diagram of how to replace the front brake pads and rotors on a 1999 ford escort? If so could you please send me the diagram or a step by step of how to do the repair.

Here is my advice on this to make life easier and get a better job. Replace the 2 calipers with pads and rotors. More often than not, the hardware in in pretty rough shape and need replacing. The little additional money to get reman calipers is worth it, especially if you are not familiar with the set up or if you want to avoid frustration. Let me know which way you want to go and I'll help.

Again, a word of caution, the manual deals with part that are not seized. Maybe, you'll get lucky, but more often than not the slide pins in the caliper MUST be clean, free and lubricated when the new pads are installed or you'll toast the new ones quicly and possibly overheat the new rotors. The pad retaining pins are also usually pretty rough. The anti-rattle wires may also be shot or prety weak. The bare remanufactured calipers by a-1 cardone anyways will include all of the replacement hardware that will probably be needed that will rival the cost the caliper.

We replaced the front pads their were shims that needed to be put back on new pads and also some clips fell off and we could not see where they came from can you show a picture where they need to go back on the pads or where ever they came from

You're going to have to find out why. It could be binding caliper pistons, caliper slides, internally restricted flex hose or just some mistake in installation. Brakes are not a good part of the car to learn on.

Hi there,

jack up car and place on sturdy stands, remove wheels, remove 2 brake pad pins and springs, lever back piston using old pad as a cushion, remove pad and fit new pad, do one pad at a time, refit springs and pins, pump brake pedal after pads are replaced to pump out pistons again.

I have a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2, 84,000 miles;

I just replaced the front brake rotors and pads, and I bled the brake system. The only problem was that the left rear brake's banjo screw was rounded and I couldn't loosen it up to bleed it. So I skipped that and bled everything else. When I took the car for a drive around the block several times to make sure all was well, the pedal seemed a bit softer than I remember it being before.

Will pressure build again? Should I bleed again? How do I deal with a rounded banjo screw? (I hate to imagine what that might entail).

Oh, I wanted to also put this out there, just in case this was done incorrectly - but I completely siphoned out the master cylinder before refilling it with clean brake fluid. This was done before I bled each brake individually.

Replacing the pads and rotors shouldn't require any bleeding. Replacing the brake fluid was good. Assuming there is no air in the syetem from the bleed proceure, I would suspect a rear brake adjustment is needed. I am assuming rear drum brakes?

Can't seem to get the drums to budge. I took the 2 screws out, sprayed around lugs and axle. I was wondering if there is something i'm missing. It's a ZX2.

Nope just remove wheel and drum screws then drum is free. Try banging in between lugs with a rubber mallet, it will come loose eventually. Also make sure your e-brake is not engaged.

You can use a brake gauge or do this expand the brake shoe by turning the start wheel adjuster till it contacts the drum and then turn the drum till you feel it dragging-STOP put everything back together make few reverse backing by stepping the brake. This will set the self adjuster
