Hello, I have a 1995 Ford Escort LSI with a 1.9 litre engine and currently 230k miles; althought 130k are on the current engine.

A few weeks ago the care overheated, the gauges didn't let me know until it was too late. Since this happened she will not start although she will turn over.

I have a decision to make, if the engine is seized I will sell the car for parts. If it is just a blown head gasket, I will repair it and sell it as a beater that works. There is a big difference in how much money I can get for the car if it is just a head gasket.

How can I tell if it is just a blown gasket or a siezed engine?

Thanks in advance
John

Pull one of the spark plugs and try to start it with the plug out. If it sprays out water it's a head gasket. Or so I was told. Also check for water in oil. Indications are either actually seeing water or oil being milky coloured.

Good luck,
K

Pull of the radiator cap and fill with water. Leave the cap off and try to crank the engine. If water shoots out of the radiator then the head gasket is blown. If the engine is seized it will not turn over at all.
