The transmission went out, and the mechanic said the torque converter failed because of moisture that got into it because of a bad cooler in the radiator. Does that sound right? I don't see how the torque converter could be affected.

Sounds kind of possible. The transmission fluid runs into the radiator which works to also help the trans fluid. The radiator could be going bad to the point where it allowed cooling water to be feed to the transmission. I would have the radiator checked along with the transmission to help ensure this is where the problem came from.
