Are you just wanting to drain and refill the fluid? If so, place vehicle on hoist and position in Neutral. Remove tranny pan bolt to empty. Tighten bolt after empty and fill with 10 quarts of Mercon V tranny fluid.

I can only speak for the 2002 Ford Escape, but it does not have a transmission filter. It only has a drain plug with a magnet on it. This is problematic, because friction material will not be caught by the magnet and circulates through the system. I heard that if a shop had to put in a new transmission, they would not warranty it unless they also replaced the transmission fluid cooling lines to the radiator and the radiator. There are aftermarket inline transmission filters that can be put in one of the cooling lines to the radiator.

Just to weigh in on this to put this to rest for the Escape. Either of the engine options (2.3L, 3.0L) come with the CD4E transmission. This means that the filter is internal to the transmission and is not serviceable unless you are tearing down the transmission for another reason. All transmissions have a filter to prevent what was mentioned previously of friction material circulating through the unit. This would be problematic but either the transmission has a filter that is serviceable or non-serviceable but all transmissions have some sort of filter.

If you are tearing it down, then there is an issue which means the filter will need to be changed to ensure the repair is complete.
