2002 Ford Escape grinding noise left front

It sounds like worn brake pads. Not so. It is possibly the cv joint. When I raise the vehicle and move the wheel back and forth it makes a clicking sound. With it in gear and tires rotating the noise seems to come from the upper joint. More of a grind sound than a clicking though.

It turned out to be the wheel bearing. Apparently the noise was traveling up the axle making it sound as if it was in the trans. Thanks for your assistance.
