Electrical problem
1989 Ford E-Series Van V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My 89 ford e-150 van with 351 winsor has an ignition problem. It will start fine, after 10 minutes it stalls after 20 to 30 minutes it will restart and then it seems to run fine. The problem got really bad ( stalling and not restarting constantly) so I replaced the ignition control mod. That made it better but I still have the inital warmup stall issue. I checked for spark after stall and nothing. Could this be a computer issue? What are the chances that the icm I replaced was bad? I put a new coil in just for kicks. Can anybody point me in another direction.

Ok have you checked the computer ground that is near the battery. There should be two 10 guage wires that are close to the battery and attach to the body usually to the core support if it is corroded or broken then fix it first and then we can do some tests to see what is causing the no spark if you have a digital multi meter. To answer your question yes the new ICM could be bad not highly likely but can happen.

Thanks for the reply. As stated I replaced the cable (which was pretty bad) That did'nt work. I also put in a new computer, That did not help either. You mentioned some tests I could do, let me know. I'm at a loss. I'm a contractor hauling tools around in a jeep wrangler with a soft top. It's not really working out. I'd really appreciate any help you could offer. Thanks.

Ok I need you to check the coil resistance but you need to run the truck and get it to die so we can test it and see if there is any spark when it is warmed up and not starting. Then use a digital multi meter to check the resistance between the neg. Side of the coil and the coil tower if it is less the 8700 or more then 11500 ohms then replace it.
