1992 FORD CROWN VICTORIA. BLACK SMOKE COMES OUT OF THE TAIL PIPES WHEN CAR IS IN IDLE AND IN MOTION. ENGINE FEELS LIKE IT'S CHOKING AND WANTS TO STALL OUT. ARE THESE SYMPTOMS OF A FAILING CATALYST CONVERTER OR IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE? NOT SURE IF THE FOLLOWING WILL HELP TO DETERMINE MY CAR PROBLEM, BUT I DID FIND THE AIR INTAKE DISCONNECTED FROM THE PART THAT HOUSES THE FEUL INJECTION. THE PROBLEMS STILL EXISTS. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

Running rich could be caused by the following:

1. Excessive fuel pressure can be cause by restricted fuel return line or defective fuel pressure regulator.
2. Defective Oxygen Sensors.
3. Leaking injectors and fuel pressure regulator.
4. Coolant temperature sensor out of calibration.
5. Restricted air intake system.
