2000 Ford Cortina starting problems

2000 Ford Cortina 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 140000 miles
I have a 2000 ford contour with 160000 miles, I started the car to warm it up and realized i needed something from the trunk, took the keys out, when I tried to restart the car, it would just turn over not even attempt to start. I checked the fuel pump it comes on when the key is turned so I dont expect it to be that, I have also sprayed starter fluid in the air filter and it still does not try to start. What else could it be without taking to a mechanic?
