My 98 Ford Contour sport

I have a 98 ford contour sport 89,000 miles, Automatic Transmission, 2 wheel dr. I actually have a few questions.

1. Why is t is overheating even through the fan is running.
2. Why does it backfire when I accelerate.
3. I can push the gas pedal to the floor and I will only only go about 15 mph until the rpm gauge goes to six then it just takes off to a normal speed.

The overheating. Does it overheat quickly or does it take some time? Is th eupper radiator hose getting hot?
Backfiring. Is the check engine light on? Has the car ever been tuned up? Might be a computer related problem, if the light is on have it scanned and get back to us
Sounds like the trans is slipping or low on fluid. Is the fluid level correct? Has it ever been serviced?
