Transmission problems

1997 ford aerostar 168,000 miles

two months ago first gear dropped out of my transmission, I now have to put my van in 2nd gear to go forward then place it in to drive. Do I need a new transmission or is there something that can be done to fix the problem?

My Escort (95) auto trans was doing wierd things also. It had 123000 miles on it. I had it towed to the tranny shop, they took it apart, and said that it was just "tired". In other words, worn out.

They rebuilt it, and it works like new now.
