How do i get the starter out of my 1995 ford aerostar?

I have a 1995 Ford Aerostar with about 150000 miles on it, it is the 4 wheel drive extended model with the 4.o in it. When I attempted to take the starter out I didn't have enought room between the block and the drive shaft. Do I need to take the driveshaft loose or is there a better way to get the starter out?

thanks

i have a 93 and thought it was the starter, but changed the solenoid (behind battery in the engine compartment) and all was well. my starter came out easily and you can have it tested for free at national parts stores.
