1978 Fiat Spider 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 106,157 miles

Gas gauge works good until 1/2 mark. The needle then moves to empty and back to 1/2 in an irregular time frame. After a while, it goes to empty and stays there. I have solved by filling up when it approaches 1/2.
