1993 Eagle Vision Limp Mode

Transmission problem
1993 Eagle Vision 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 88K miles

I have a 1993 Eagle Vision TSI 3.5 V 6.

The caqr is in great shape and runs terrificically untill it decides to go into Limp Mode.
I have no idea why.
It runs great, shifts greast and then into limp mode.
May stay there for a while or go back into normal after I have stopped for a while.
May only be for 20 minutes or so that I stop.
Goes into limp mode after 20 to 40 minutes of
driving.
I did have a catalytic converter that clogged and gave me transmission trouble for a while.
When I changed the converter the problem resolved for a whle and then returned.

How long will it run in limp mode?
Do I need to be concerned that the transmission will stop engauging totally and leave me in need of a tow?

Since it starts out working ok, you can probably rule out a sensor problem. Although a sensor could develop a problem due to heat, it is more likely there is slippage taking place in one of the clutch packs, especially if it goes to second gear, (limp-in) right after an upshift.

Your mechanic will connect a hand-held computer to read the diagnostic fault codes in the transmission computer. That will provide the clues as to the cause of the problem. Once in limp-in, it will stay there until the ignition switch is turned off and the engine is restarted. At that point, if it starts out right away in second gear, suspect a sensor problem.

The purpose of limp-in mode is to allow you to drive slowly to the repair shop. It should not be driven at highway speeds.
