Feel the heater hoses when the engine is warmed up. They should be too hot to hold onto for very long. If they are, check the air temperature from the ducts when you move the temperature slide control. If the temperature does not change, the door is rusted tight.

The cable is fed through three fingers on the end of the temperature door lever. When the control lever is moved fully in one direction or the other, the door gets to the end of its travel, then the cable continues to slide through those fingers. That is how it self-adjusts. Condensation can cause the bottom hinge pin of the door to rust it tight, then the cable just slides through the three fingers giving the impression the door is moving.

It takes a while to type a description of the fix. Please holler back if you think this is what's happening. I'll do my best to tell you what to do.
