i have a 1996 dodge ram 1500 with the 318 and 118764 miles on it. it has a small oil leak. i have always kept a close eye on it to make sure i don't go to low on oil. recently i've noticed that it has not been loosing any oil, but the oil is discolored and smells strongly of gas. im thinking that it is getting gas pumped int the crankcase. my question is, is that possible, and if so, what would cause it?

It's definitley possible. If the cylinders are not buring the fuel effieciently that will happen. a misfire for example is the most typical. If not present, make sure the plugs, wires, cap and rotor are up to snuff.
