About a week ago my 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi and 82,000 mi. started making a high pitched whining which sounded like it was from the differential. It gets louder the faster you go and I put my hand on the differential and it was hot. It does not go away when I am rolling and put it into neutral, and do see some oil residue on the front seal and looks like it was spun onto gas tank. Any ideas before I tear into this?

Sounds like the pinion bearing, you need to pull the cover, the lock pin slide the axles out enough to pull the carrier, remove the pinion, replace bearing on pinion shaft and the race in the diff case! I would do the carrier bearings while I'm in there!
