My Dodge pickup quit while I was driving. The instrument panel flickered and then it stopped. The first time it started back up and drove on for a few minutes then stopped again as soon as I let off the gas. The second time it stopped it wouldnt start back up until I got a jump. Is it electrical or fuel?
Please help I had the alternator tested and was toldthe diode test was n/a and it probably had an external diode.

Hi,

The idea that the lights flickered before the engine stopped does sound like it is electrical. I'm not sure why you were told the alternator test was NA.

Here is the thing. Most alternators have an internal voltage regulator, but this truck is different. It is actually a voltage regulating circuit located within the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) that does the job.

Here is what I suggest. First, I need you to test the alternator output. It is really easy to do.
All you will need is a voltmeter or a multimeter. Follow the directions in this link:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-alternator

If the alternator fails the test, you will need to remove it and have it bench tested. If it fails under these conditions, replace it. If it doesn't fail, suspect the PCM has failed.

Here are directions that explain how to replace the alternator:

Additionally, I attached the directions below specific to your vehicle.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Hello,

It is possible that the alternator is not charging the battery properly and after it is discharged it will stall the engine, typically when coming to a stop.
Is your battery light illuminated on the dash?
When you had the alternator checked did you check to see how much voltage it was producing to the battery?
A good alternator should produce between 13.6V to 15.2V.

Keep in mind that when an engine stalls due to a bad alternator, it will not have any power when trying to restart.

Attached is the alternator replacement procedure below for your reference.

Let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
