Most local part stores such as AutoZone or O'Reilly Auto Parts will perform a diagnostic scan of the engine codes for free. However, I believe some of the part stores only have scanners made for vehicles that were released in 1996 or later.
If this is the case, you can purchase a diagnostic scanner for your vehicle which will be much cheaper than paying a repair shop everytime your engine code appears.
