No start. No power to the fuel pump. Is there a special relay just for the fuel pump or can you switch them around?

What's the history that led up to this? Did the engine stall while you were driving, or did it just suddenly fail to start? Have you checked for spark? You should still hear the hum of the fuel pump for one second when you turn on the ignition switch.

The 1500 uses a separate automatic shutdown, (ASD) relay and fuel pump relay, but they're both turned on by the Engine Computer at the same time. There's nothing special about either one so you can switch them as a quick test.

If you or a helper can hear the fuel pump run for one second when you turn on the ignition switch, that entire circuit and the fuel pump relay are okay. If you do have spark during cranking, the ASD relay is turning on. That proves the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor are okay, and we have to look at the fuel supply system. If you don't have spark, the fastest test is to connect a grounded test light to the positive wire on the ignition coil. That will be the dark green / orange wire. You can also back-probe any of the injectors for this test. Same wire color at every one of them.

You should see the test light turn on for one second when you turn on the ignition switch. What's important is if it turns back on when you crank the engine. If it does not, the cam and crank sensors are the first suspects.

A failed sensor will not always set a diagnostic fault code right away or just when cranking the engine. They often set only when a stalled engine is coasting to a stop. Regardless, have you read the fault codes yet? Do you know how to do that yourself? Chrysler made it very easy by cycling the ignition switch from "off" to "run" three times within five seconds, without cranking the engine, leave it in "run", then watch the code numbers appear in the odometer display. You can go here to see the code definitions:

https://www.2carpros.com/trouble_codes/obd2

or I can interpret them for you. If the battery was disconnected, the fault codes will have been erased.

When I turn the key on, my fuel pump constantly runs. I have to either turn the key on and wait 20-30 minutes or play with the key turning it on and off until I can get the GEN light to come on. When the GEN light comes on I can hear the ASD relay clicking on and then I can usually start it up. When it does start I can turn the truck on and off with no problem. If it sits though without running I'm back to square one. Once the truck is started there is no problem with it running, it's just in the start up.
Anyone know what this could be?I have been checking similar issues that others have had but there seems to be tiny little differences between years and models.I need advice on this particular year and model.

Thanks
Setay. J

Try removing transmission relay as it could power up fuel pump. If not it may be a pcm problem or oil pressure switch has a hot wire touching the one for fuel pump. Either that or body/battery ground is bad or a pcm problem.

Thanks I'll try that tomorrow. I have been trying to figure it out all day. As far as the ground, my brother-in-law is a mechanic and that is the first thing he mentioned. He's one of those guys that won't work on family vehicles or even
his own. Couple of things I forgot to mention, 1) is when the key is on I hear a
slight whining noise coming from the IAC, I'm not sure if this is normal. 2) the other
thing is that one day I fuel ed up with the 87 octane gas and then talked with
the manager of the store for 45 mins, which is a friend but I left my truck running for all that time. When I left the truck started to diesel very badly. Now all I can run in it is 93 octane or add octane booster to the 87. When I got the fuel it was in the fall and don't the gas co. Change the blend around that time. At least that's what I attributed the dieseling to.

My 1997 dodge1500 p/u was stalling a lot, so my mechanic tried cleaning at the tps and the i.A.T. For 2 days the idle stayed good and no stalling. On the third day the truck would not turn over. I towed to the station. My check light had never gone on, he told me he checked everything and tried the diagnostic. He said most likely it was the fuel pump. He said he banged on my gas tank and my truck started. I have been driving it for 3 days now with no problems. Could it just be a relay, and how would I check. I also never heard the fuel pump whine or make that noise. I dont want to go back to this guy. Do you have any ideas. I also keep thinking about the i.A.C and the t.P.S because of the truck starting then not starting then stalling. Please help! P.S I have 200,000 miles my truck is in mint cond. And always drove like it was new.

Idle and stalling problem:

Clean out the idle air control valve/motor and the EGR and PCV valves and check the fuel pressure and also test the ASD and fuel pump relay then comeback with some results

Finally back at it again after a week of being sick. I have cleaned the throttle body and replaced the Iac. Still no luck. Before you mentioned that the hot wire for the oil pressure switch could be touching the one for the fuel pump, where do I check for that? Also noticed a little bit of oil leaking out of the bell housing could this have any affects on the tone wheel making it tough for the cpk to read. When I bump the starter I sometimes can get the GEN light to come on but it doesn't always shut the fuel pump off. When I turn the key on sometimes the buzzer comes on but this has been since I got the truck along with the check engine light never coming on either.

I doubt the leak would have anything to do with thetone wheel, but pull out crank sensor and see if there is a buildup of gunk that may pe part of theproblem. You would check at the oil pressure switch, for the wires rubbed together. Other than that I have no further suggestions because of odd ball things like what you have a pro h as to physically look at

On the truck listed above the fuel pump was replaced and battery, plugs, pcv valve, air filter. Alternator check fine. All fuses and relays checked fine. The pump will not pump. So is there anything else it can be?
Truck has a 5.2

If everything is good, there has to be a break in the wiring between the relay and the pump.

Welcome to the forum, use a testlite, check voltage circuits at the fuel pump relay. Voltage for load side of relay is hot all the time. Voltage for coil side of relay goes hot when you turn on the key. Pcm grounds coil side of relay to energize, initial prime or engine running.

Brown wire with white tracer is the ground controlled by the pcm, terminal 85, according to my info.
