Engine Performance problem

A few days ago my engine light came on and when I pulled out of my driveway the car began to almost like jump or stall it was as if it wasn't getting enough gas. The light went off for a few days when I put gas in it and now it is doing it again but worse it doesn't want to go. what could be the problem?
