Engine Performance problem
1997 Dodge Neon 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 150,kl miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Good Day, Got this car 3 months ago last 4 weeks its been hard to start (thought it was a dodge trait) rough idle, and everytime I put the gas to it, it sputters and hesitates, if i ease up on gas it SLOWLY gets going but not inclines. also have noticed gas smell in car... asked 4 mechanics get 4 different answers. help please. I 've replaced spark plugs, wires, seals (oil in spark tube) found out the previous owner removed catalytic converter, and didn't tell me. the car ran fine for 1/2 hr great peppy. but on my way back it was back to its usual self.....could this be a sensor overheating??

i dont really have an answer for you but we are having a very similar problem with our 2004 neon. we have changed spark plugs multiple times too and every time we take it in they tell us to change the spark plugs. our check engine light is always on and now it has started blinking, which according to our manual says there is a problem with the catalytic converter, so maybe your problem has to do with the fact that you have no converter. we are taking our car to a new mechanic and if that is what turns out to be the problem i will let you know.
