I was going twenty five mph when I guess I bottomed out on a hole and hit the ground. It suddenly would not get any gas and the engine quit. Now it will try to crank, but will not turn over, only whir's. could it be an emergency fuel switch, fuel filter, or god forbid the fuel pump?

This sounds like the crankshaft angle sensor or the fuel pump has gone out, when you turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine over can you hear the fuel pump run in the tank for 5 seconds? These guides should help us fix it.

Hi, if it cranks good but won't start. Have a helper crank it, while you visually check for spark at the plugs. If you have spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. To check for spark, you can pull plug wire, stick known good plug/spark tester in the boot. Ground metal part of plug/tester to metal part of engine, have helper crank, watch for spark.

Hello,

If you are getting fuel and you have spark, then I would suggest doing a compression test. Here is a link that will explain how to troubleshoot your situation:

have posted 2 previous questions(1-15-09 and 2-10-09) and got good diagnostic answers BUT still can't get to start. To give someone an overview: engine will try to start so ck'd fuel pressure,ok. ck'd spark and have spark on 2 & 3 cyl., no spark at 1 & 4 cyl. replaced coil pack, no start. checked for pulse and no pulse for 1 & 4 cyl. ck'd wiring for opens at coil pack to pcm, ok. replaced pcm with rebuilt pcm from internet supplier Auto Computer Exchange, still no start. ck'd and no spark on any cylinders. reinstalled old computer and got spark on 2 & 3 cyl. again. sent back rebuilt computer for exchange. In the meantime replaced crank sensor, no start. ck'd wires for open, ok. Installed second rebuilt computer and no start, ck'd and did have spark at 2 and 3 again nothing at 1 and 4. Reposted question and got repy that related to cam sensor. replaced cam sensor, no start.ck'd wires ok. Also have ck'd for codes repeately and no codes present. What to do now?????

You seem to have replaced and checked everything else .. may as well check the ASD relay and wiring .. although this supplies ground to coils and you must have ground for it to fire cylinders 2 & 3 ? also check the slots on outer edge of flywheel/flexplate or on crankshaft counterweight. and the slots in cam timing sprocket or check you are getting pulse from these ? CKP pulse wire is grey/black the CMP pulse wire is tan/yellow

AUTO SHUTDOWN (ASD) RELAY & FUEL PUMP RELAY
ASD relay and electric fuel pump relay are energized when ignition is on. These relays are controlled through PCM by switching a common ground circuit on and off. Following components are controlled by ASD and fuel pump relays:
Electric Fuel Pump
Fuel Injectors
Generator Field Winding
Ignition Coil(s)
HO2S Heating Element
When ignition switch is turned to RUN position, PCM energizes ASD relay and electric fuel pump relay which powers these components. If PCM does not receive a CMP and CKP sensor signal within one second of engine cranking (start-up), PCM will turn ground circuit off and de-energize ASD relay.

On Distributorless Ignition System (DIS), CMP sensor reads slots in cam timing sprocket. PCM uses this information along with information from Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor to determine if fuel injectors and ignition coils are properly sequenced for correct cylinders.

CKP is a Hall Effect-type sensor. On some vehicles, CKP sensor is mounted on left rear side of transmission bell housing. On other vehicles, CKP sensor is mounted on right rear side of block, near cylinder head. Sensor reads slots on outer edge of flywheel/flexplate or on crankshaft counterweight. Each slot causes a pulse to be generated as it passes under CKP sensor. Signal generated provides engine speed and CKP information to PCM, which along with other input signals, determines fuel injection sequence, ignition signal and spark timing.

If your saying it won't even crank, check the starter circuit. Make sure battery has a full charge and connections are good.

If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it, while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If you have spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Some of the national brand auto stores used to loan out a fuel pressure gage, if you don't have one. To visually check for spark at the plugs, pull a spark plug wire loose, use known good plug or spark tester in the boot, ground metal part of plug/tester to metal part of engine, engine cranking, watch for spark.

Check for applicable mil codes, where possible.

The fuel pump will only run for one second when you turn on the ignition switch, then again when the engine is rotating, (cranking or running). When Chrysler fuel pumps fail, they almost always fail to start up. Once they do start up, they rarely stop while they are running. If you do not hear the hum of the pump for that one second when you turn on the ignition switch, you can often get them started by banging on the bottom of the gas tank. If that works, it can be expected to stay running until you stop the engine. The problem may not occur again for weeks or months, but it will gradually get worse over time. Sometimes this only works when you bang on the gas tank while a helper is cranking the engine.

After changing the water pump and reassembling everything. I could not get the motor to start. I was later told that the car had stalled and shut off.
But was left for me to fix. I have changed every thing the shop manual says could be defective I.E. Plugs, S/P wires, Coil, Computor (Not purchased at a dealership) and finally the Crank Position Sensor.
CPS was replaced because I got a reading of 9 volts going in but nothing coming back out.
Any ideas?

If the vehicle cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the plugs. If there is no spark, check for primary voltage at the coil and injectors, dark green wire orange tracer, check for voltage, engine cranking. You might also check for codes. Cycle the key, on--off, on--off, on. By on I mean, turn the key till the dash lites come on, no further. The check engine lite starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes.

It had been starting, would run around 15 minutes then die like u turned the key off. After about 2 hours it would start and do the same. Now it will not start{cranks- no spark} I rented a high dollar scanner--it told me 1 fault code that recommended replacing the crank angle and cam angle sensors. Any good information would b helpful. Thanks---Mark

Had a few problems with my 1995 dodge neon.....got the error code 54 from the car by doing the key thing.....now it wont start.....we replaced the starter, water pump and the timing belt but someone said that error code 54 was most likely the camshaft position sensor.....does this sound correct???

Correct. Error code 54 indicates that there is no cam signal at the powertrain control module (PCM). You should have it replaced. If you are mechanically inclined and would like instructions on replacing than let me know and I will post them. Otherwise have your local garage repair it for you.

I have a 94 Dodge Neon and it's been setting for over a year and it will not start and I was wondering how to empty the gas tank. I'm thinking if I empty the old gas and put in new gas it should be ok. IF you have any other suggestions it would be helpful.

Thanks

before you empty the tank try this first. The problem might simply be air in the fuel lines. Turn on the car until you hear the fuel pump stop. turn off the car and on the fuel rail will be a cap in the middle. remove the cap and put a paper towel at the edge and use a screwdriver to push in the valve to release the fuel pressure. Be careful the fuel is under a lot of pressure. You may have to repeat this procedure a few time to get fuel out. you need to purge the air for the injectors. when cranking the engine over to get it primed do not keep cranking it give the started a break so it doesn't overheat and go bad trying to start the car. Another thing you can do to help it get purged and started is to pour a small dixie sized cup of fuel into the inlet of the throttle body and then go to start the car. Be very careful putting in the fuel and stay away from the intake when trying to start it in case of backfire. If that doesn't get it done it will take about ten minutes to do this procedure but if it doesn't work then to remove the tank just remove the two straps under the car and the filler neck from the body and it will come right out.
