I am having serious troublel. 2.7L, 84,000 miles 2000 dodge intrepid. Diagnotstic read as a throttle position sensor. Replaced it and cleanded sludge of the throttle body and problem is still existing. What else could be causing the car to not start?

The check engine light may or may not be related to the no start.

You need to find what is missing: Fuel, Spark or compression. Those are the needs for combustion.
But all 3 must be there.

At least its turning over.

To eliminate fuel, you can spray some carb cleaner into the throttle body and crank it.

Pull the plugs out and get a look at them, Those aren't the long life ones.

Speaking of sludge, these have a problem with an oil sludge build up.

It sounds like one of the missing ingredients may be fuel. You can hook up a pressure gauge to the fuel line and check for pressure.

The backfiring means combustion not at the right time, There may be a timing issue involved.
