My 2002 Intrepid, 90,000 Miles has progressed int he following way:

Started out by engine temp and heater not warming for extended periods of driving, then suddenly would jump to normal operating temperature.
Next, occassional overheating. Seems to work fine at crusing speeds, but overheats when in city-style traffic or long idle.
Next, occassional stalling or failure to start, then would just as suddenly clear and drive fine.
Last, low oil pressure light, accompanied with overheating, despite oil and coolant levels normal.
Have not changed the thermostat yet, but fear something worse and more enclusive is wrong. Any ideas?

I was afraid your were going to say that. The 2.7 motors had a design flaw..or flaws. I had to research this problem a while back. You are probably not too far from needing an engine. Instead of re-writing a ton of information.

I don't know that there are 2 different problems in your case one in the cooling system and another with the low oil pressure. But the low oil pressure takes a higher priority regardless. You may want to hook a pressure gauge into the oil pressure sensor hole and take it up on the thruway to monitor the oil pressure and see if if is indeed low.

Yeah, not good news at all.

I think I would look into putting one of the other engines in like that thread refers to. You can get a decent used one I would think.
