The check engine light is on & it wont pass smog. I took it to a shop & they came u[p with code:P0601 & said its the computer brain. What I want to know is do I have to take it to the dealer & pay $800.- 1000. Or can I get a brain from a junk yard, does it then have to be programed by the dealer? What about (flashing) what is that & would it work? Any advice you have I would appriciate! THANK-YOU VERY MUCH

Programming and flashing are the same thing. Yes, the PCM does have to be programmed before it can be used. I would never attempt to use a junkyard PCM. Not only are there a million different part numbers but I wouldn't want any electronics that have been sitting around exposed to weather as they have.
