The only way it will be escaping is due to a leak, it doesnt disentegrate or burn off. look for wet power steering hoses and around everything else around the pump.

I have a 99 durango. i just replaced the high pressure steering hose. They tend to leak around the metal high pressure clamps. The whole hose needs to be replaced if thats the case. I have done this repair to 3 durango's and its the same thing, so hopefully its that for you. The hose is about $20 and relatively easy to install if you have good experience. Make sure you bleed the system properly. Hope this helps.
