Engine Cooling problem
1999 Dodge Dakota 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I need to replace the water pump in a 99 dodge dakota, 2 wheel drive, automatic. I am an average amatuer mechanic and do have the tools. I have gotten mixed signals on the difficulty of this job. Some say it's easy, some say it can be quite difficult.
I am trying to save money but I don't want to spend alot of time on the job. I have gotten estimates from $400 to $600. OUCH!
Should I go for it and save or pay a mechanic and have peace of mind?

If you have time on it, I would say DIY and save some money. You will need a special wrench for the fan clutch, but other than that, it is just nuts and bolts. Some of those require removal of the a/c comp and possibly the monting bracket, but you dont have to evacuate the system, just move the compressor out of the way to access a by-pass hose on top of the pump, but not on all of them.A good idea is to look at a new pump to see if there are any hoses you cant see right away on the engine.
