where is the pick up coil located in the distributor and how do I get to it?

You didn't bother to give any symptoms or details so my recommendation is to replace the distributor. They had very little trouble with the pickup assembly, but they did have a lot of trouble with worn bushings. They cause the shaft to wobble leading to erratic timing, surging, sputtering, and stalling. This was a very common problem.
