After driving for an hour or more with the a/c on, when going up an incline the airflow out the normal vents will diminish and switch over to the defrost/defog vents. The air remains cool, but will not return to the normal vents unless reset by the control knob during a descent/decline or until the car is stopped.

It sounds like you are dealing with a vacuum leak. The vents are actuated by vacuum. If there is a leak and the pressure drops too low, the air flow will change directions. Check under the dash and the hood for leaks. If you are lucky, with the engine running, you may hear a hissing sound.

Let me know what you find.
