Transmission problem

I have a 1994 doge caravan 130,000 miles 3.3 liter.
Was driving down the road It made a horrible clunking sound then quit moving. This happened before and I replaced a cv joint. I was wondering how you can tell if a cv joint is bad or not. My brother told me that it is the cluster gears inside the transmission. How can you tell?

as far as cv joints go, when you turn the wheel pretty much all the way and it makes a clicking noise then replace them and new boots.
