I have been having a whirring type noise in the front of the van that seems to worsen when the steering is used. The noise begins when the car is turned on. The van runs okay and there is no noticable performance difficulty. The engine light did appear for the first time today, however.

Hello,

That noise is likely from the power steering pump.
The pump can make the noise when it is low on fluid or as the pump ages the internals will wear off and many times it will make noise when you put load (turn the wheel) on the pump.
First check the fluid level and make sure it is correct.

In order to change the pump you will have to remove the drive belt. After the pump removal you will have to remove the pulley from the pump. Removing the pulley requires a special tool. Which can be rented from you local auto parts store.

Here are some helpful articles:

The check engine light may not be related to the noise. First thing you will need to do is get the vehicle scanned for trouble codes, which will help determine what is the reason the light is illuminated.

I have attached diagrams for your reference.

Please let me know of any questions.

Thank you.
