Lift-gate does not open using handle

Six cylinder two wheel drive automatic 65,000 miles.

The handle that opens the lift-gate (rear door) no longer works. (I can still open it with the key). This handle actually triggers a switch which sends power to a solenoid that opens the latch. I tested the solenoid with a motorcycle battery and found it works. The license plate lights also work. So I assume that either the switch in the handle or wiring somewhere is the cause.

I cannot figure out how to gain access to the switch in the handle without damaging it. I also cannot seem to source a repair manual for 2004 Caravan locally.

Alternatively, perhaps it has something to do with the keyless entry system. When I open the locks with the keyless entry I believe it enables the circuit that allows the handle (switch) to power the solenoid.

Much appreciative of assistance.

For the sake of others searching the web, I finally solved the problem. It turned out that it was the switch in the handle. (The handle is actually a switch) Figuring out how to remove it was the hard problem.

After removing the plastic shroud that holds the handle and license plate lights (two screws and two bolts) and accessing the switch from behind, you can remove it by pushing it outward. There are two clips that keep it in place. Depress these and push it outward. Seems obvious now. Do not know why I thought it had to push inward.

After removing the rubber seal you can pry open the plastic lid to the switch interior. I found it to be extensively corroded and dirty inside. I confirmed the switch was the problem by shorting it.

By the way, the two bolts that hold the plastic shroud in place are the type that require a special star screwdriver. I was successful using an allen key.
