2000 Dodge Avenger engine wail
Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Dodge Avenger 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 81000 miles
I have a 2000 dodge avenger that wails at start-up in the cold. The noise will go away after a couple minutes when the engine warms. The colder the weather, the louder the wail and the longer it takes to go away (usually 2-4 minutes). Any ideas? Driving me crazy. Some say it might be a belt.

Use a stethoscope to listen near the various pulleys while the noise is occurring. In particular, suspect the power steering pump. If it is the culprit, the noise will be loudest at the high pressure output hose. In that case, suck out as much fluid as possible from the reservoir, then refill it with Mopar "Cold Weather Power Steering Fluid". You can get this from the dealership Parts Dept. It is really meant for diesel trucks but it will work in cars too.
