1996 Other Daewoo Models Catalytic converter problem

1996 Other Daewoo Models 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 14267 miles
my daweoo, ceilo-96 is misfiring & i am not able to achieve good speed. on higher gear it shakes a lot as though the engine might stop. yesterday i observed that my gearbox panel was extremely hot so hot that both fron sides of seat was also hot. what could be the reason. is catcon affected. if so what should i expect from my mechanic. weather he should replace the catcon or it can be cleaned n replaced?
