1996 Citroen Saxo car missingand noisey tappet

1996 Citroen Saxo 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 87542 miles
my car misfires constantly now and i also have noisy tappets which comes and goes if timing belt is loose would that be cause hav checked timing but the holes line up should i tighten the belt
