what should the average cost be for an altinator job. I broke down on the PA turnpike and need to get my car fixed by a mechanic I do not know. My battery light came on and the lights started to go off and on and then the lights went out and the car geared down and I pulled of the road and all the dashlights came on and the car finally shut down. The lights would come on for awhile but the when I tried to turn the car on and it made a clicking sound. I have had an altinator in other cars and I would say that is what happened with this car.

If you have cruise control, I would charge 280 labor plus the price of the alternator depending on what brand you wanted.

If you don’t have cruise it would be 230.

I might suggest that you replace the belt as well.

With the high mileage, I would expect worn brushes in the alternator. USUALLY this causes an intermittent problem at first which can last for weeks or months before a permanent failure occurs. If the back cover is reasonably accessible, the brushes can be replaced without removing the alternator from the engine.
