Steering Problem, 2001 Neon

2001 Chrysler Neon with 45,000 miles. My son reported the steering came real close to totally freezing up... very hard to turn wheel... he was able to get to a parking spot. When I got to the car an hour or two later, I checked the fluid, but it seemed OK. I got in the car and drove it around the parking lot and then home. It was fine. Wife now won't let the kids drive it until we figure out what's going on. What do I need to do?
Thanks!

Sounds like either the Rack and Pinion is goin out, or the pump is failing. Any strange noises when this occured? Inspect the drive belt and tensioner just to eliminate them as possibilities. Sometimes the tensioner will freeze letting the belt slip=no P/S.
The rack and pinion will also get sticky when its going out.
