Misfires

As far as the engine misfiring my dad and i have changed the spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotary cap, adjusted the carburator countless nuber of times and the longest i have driven the car without a problem is a week at the most without it backfiring and i dont know what could be the problem?

I would do a compression check, without more info about eng. and conditions of backfire and miss. I might think burnt valve.
