1992 Chevy Van Shifter

My 92 chevy G-10 Shifter is "loose" that is there is no positive detents as you move the lever thru its range. The trans operates as it should down and up shifts you just have to move the lever around to find the correct gear. The shift cable and lever itself are secure, it appears the problem is in the ball and sliding detents that are around the column. Hope this is a common problem. Thanks Peter

First you need to drive the pin up out of the column to free the shifter to see if it is worn/broken or if the problem is in the column. There should be a spring in there, watch for it.
