I am purchasing a 1990 Chevy 4x4 and it has a problem shifting into third gear. it will shift into first and second, but not third. I dont know if it needs to be rebuilt, or if it is something simple in the valve body.

Hey I have a 1990 Chevy 1500 C/K series doing the same thing. I had to have the transmission rebuilt but I pulled it myself using this video.

https://youtu.be/3vJAojsrfuU

Cost me $650.00 for the rebuild so I saved $550.00 :) I love this site.

The truck was doing fine and I pulled boat home. When I got into drive it the next day it would not shift from second to third or overdrive. I changed out the filter and change the fluid but no change. Anything I can do or do I need to rebuild it?

Hello,

It sounds like it could be the transmission has gone out or one of the shift solenoids is shorted.

Please let us know what happens, we are interested to see what it is.

Cheers, Ken

Bolts holding down assy are loose and will not tighten. Assume threads have stripped, but bolts themselves look good.
This problem causes shifting problems.
On top of that, there seems to be clutch problems as well.
I would like to avoid a transmission shop, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
The truck belongs to my son-in-law, a former USMC who served in Desert Storm and is now unable to work on the truck himself.

Thanks a bunch.

If the bolts are stripped, tap them out to the next metric size up and replace the bolts with the resized holes.

My transmission is not shifting. I changed the filter and the model on the side of the transmission and it still will not shift? Is the transmission bad or is there something else that I can look at.

It could be the govenor plugged but it could be something else. YOu are better off taking it to a trans pro to get a better diagnosis

I have a 2000 chevy suburban. Just recently it wouldn't shift into OD and the check engine light came on. I got the DTC and it was P0753 Shift Solenoid A Circuit Electrical. A day or so later the check engine light went off and it went to OD fine, but now it is shifting weird from 2-3, kind of tries to shift once then completes the shift a few seconds later. Also now when I floor it sometimes it takes off good, then other times seems if I'm starting in second gear and not first, it goes ok but not a quick as it did before? Any help is much appreciated.

It is more than likely the solinoid failing. Which is around 135.00 but if anywhere close to 150,000 miles you will be better off getting it rebuilt. Mine just recently did the same thing.

I have a Chevy Pickup, it has been running well and it just all of a sudden stopped shifting out of first. I messed with it a bit and it shifted into second but thats it. I figure its somethin major but if there is anything I can do to check before I take it in that would help.

Well for one if you havent kept up with maintnace on the trans you can go and change the filter in the transmition but I do advise to put at least one qurt of the old stuff back in it and while having the pan off clean all the ports and holes you see with some parts cleaner and then just put it back together

Did you make sure your getting enough vacuum through the line? It kinda sounds like you tranny is about to go away. The life of an auto tranny is about 100,000 miles. Some tranny shops have free estimates, thats your best bet to let the pros tell you.

I have a 94 Chevy Silverado with the 4L60E tranny and 200,000 miles on it. At around 80,000 miles it started to ocasionally stick in high gear when you pull up to a stop sign. It seems to do it worse when it has been out on the road for an hour or two, and more so in the hotter part of the year. The first time this happened I took it to a quick lube shop and had the whole system flushed. It still ocasionally would not down shift at stop signs. I then took it to a transmission shop where they suggested changing the shift solenoids. This seemed to solve the problem as it didn't happen again for a couple of years (20,000 miles). Then it started doing it again. I then added an after market tranny oil cooler. Seemed better but still happened ocasionally. I then had a trans shop suggest changing the pressure valve. That was a definite waste of money. It really doesn't bother me, because I just pull it down manually and it will eventually drop into low. But I am getting ready to sell it and I don't want the new owner to come back with this complaint. Any ideas?
