1996 Chevy Suburban rear planetary gear broke

1996 Chevy Suburban V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 203000 miles
we love this car and want to be able to use it just occasionally in bad weather or to carry larger loads than our other cars can handle. what is involved, approximately what would it cost to repair, and (in your opinion) is it worth it?

Who gave you the planetary gear diagnosis? They should have an idea of the cost of fixing it, A rebuilt for it will run about 2500.00 or more...
