Silverado plug wires

Hey everyone,
I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 and surrounding the boots of the plug wires are metallic sheaths and I was wondering what purpose do they serve? Is this common on newer makes and models?
Thanks!

I believe the metal covers are to prevent radio noise they are shields that keep the spark plug pulses from coming thru your radio.
