2003 Chevy Silverado Check Engine Light/Sluggish Performanc
2003 Chevy Silverado V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 107K miles
2003 Chevy 1500 - 8 cyl - 107K miles. Check engine light came on. I took it to our local Chevy dealership. Initial quote was $280. Later looking at the quote, they were pricing replacing the spark plugs and making a steering column adjustment. They reset light but could not find the problem. They thought it might be a loose gas cap. I thought "check engine" is either related to ignition or emission problem? Plugs were replaced at 100K miles (along with the other required servicing). Check engine light has come back on, and I don't feel comfortable bringing it back down to the dealership. Believe they're too interested in just selling service.
Truck seems to be running okay, but I have noticed a loss in power. Acceleration is slow when I jump on it.
We live in a small town and I do not have a mechanic I can trust. Any suggestons for possible repair would be appreciated.

Scan the engine for code(s) and get back.
auto zone or auto part store help lot of people diagnosing there vehicle for free.
Po449. The gentleman that read the error suggested it might be as simple as a bad gas cap. Do these really go bad?

A lose gas cap will set p0440 code.
you can change the gas cap,it won't change anything.
The code you have is p0449.
EVAP Vent Solenoid Control Circuit Malfunction
Possible Causes:
Vent solenoid control circuit is open or shorted to ground
Vent solenoid control circuit is shorted to system power (B+)
Vent solenoid power circuit is open (test the ENG1 fuse)
Vent solenoid is damaged or has failed
• A vent solenoid allows fresh air
into the canister during purge, and closes
during diagnostics to reduce the pressure
in the fuel tank (below atmospheric)
what you need to do is to check for lose wiring to the solenoid, replace ENG1 in the fuse block,replace the solenoid if wiring is good.
The vent solenoid is located beside the purge solenoid valve.(see diagram)
