I bought a scanner hoping it would have a cam retard offset on it but it didn't. But what it does have is a spark advance that reads in degrees similar to what the cam retard offset would have been. Is there a correlation between the two? Can I use the spark advance to time the engine? I need the camshaft timing

I'm not quite sure I understand. You need the scanner to set the timing on this vehicle as you already know, but the scan tool should have a setting to time. If you can identify the timing from your scanner, run the engine at about 1000 RPM's and adjust the distributor until you get TDC +/- 2 degrees The camshaft timing is below. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Is the scanner designed to only read advance? If so, to the best of my knowledge, it won't work.

Hi again and may I get the timing marks and also the firing order and the distributor setting. If I had removed the head of the truck do I still need to have it shaved. What you recommend.

Im really sorry but I dont the engine size know every thing in the motor now is like faded on all the stickers. I think its a 5.7 Some thing V8

Thanks

I attached the marks in which you need to time the engine and the firing order. As for the distributor, that just needs to be turned until you line up the ignition timing using these marks on the crank pulley.

Also, you do not need to shave the head unless it is warped. So if the head is straight then you leave it alone.

Let us know if you have questions. Thanks

Hi:
According to the Mitchelle manual, timing is set at 0 degrees BTDC at an idle. There will be two timing marks, one on the harmonic balancer (indicating degrees) and one is mounted on the timing chain cover.
Let me know if this helps.

Joe

I have a 89 silverado 1500 4x4 w/5.7L motor. My problem is the timing marks on the timing cover are rusted. I can't tell which mark 0 (tdc). If I could see pic of it or tell me which mark is 0 (tdc) it would be helpful in setting my timing.

If they are rusted, take a brillo pad and clean it. IT should come clean. Another thing (I don't like to depend on) is to remove the #1 spark plug, place a long screwdriver into the cylinder and by hand, slowly turn the engine. When the screwdriver comes up and then starts down, that it TDC (right at the summit of its travel).
