Engine Performance problem

I just purchased a 1985 chevy truck with a canapy! I am so excited. He told me I need to rebuild the carboretor or buy a new one. But not to drive it on long distance trips. I drive it about five blocks to my garden just for fun and then home. I don't know what to watch for, what might happen while I am driving. How safe is it to drive farther away. Like down the road to the garden center?
