I have a 1997 s10 chevy 4.3 pickup that will not crank till dash lights come on. Sometimes it takes awhile for the dash lights to come on to. Sounds crazy but true.

I'm beginning to experience where my 1997 s-10 will not start until the dash lights come on as well. I have in the past replace the ignition switch with a new one. This work was completed at a dealer and cost several hundred dollars. Tonight, I disassembled the steering column enough to remove the ignition switch and replace it myself for $16. This however did not resolve the problem. I still experience this delay in being able to start the truck. Here's basically what happens key goes in the ignition and I turn it to forward one click, the dash lights come on or I wait a few seconds and they come on. If I wait, there is no other noise I can hear. When the lights do come on, the fuel pump kicks in, the dash lights up and the car is ready to start. I can turn the key to start up and it runs fine. If I don't wait for the lights to come on and turn the key to start, it won't start. The engine will turn over but it will never start. Any ideas? I'm willing to donate to the cause the cost of the ignition switch plus some if I can resolve this problem with your help and I don't have to go to someone else for the repair. Thanks!

My first post incorrectly called the ignition lock the ignition switch. The ignition lock was not faulty. I replaced it and could still duplicate the problem. I replaced the ignition switch for around $100. THanks for letting us post our questions, hopefully this will help the next DIY'er. The hardest part of the whole job was locating a female torx small enough to fit the igntion switch bolts.

Hi there!

I have the same problem with my Blazer. Do you happen to have GM Part-nr and/or any pictiure/image of the ignition switch?

It's on top of the steering column, under the dash. Connected to the Keylock by a steel bar.
You will need security torx bits to get it off! You can get them from JC whitney for cheap. (Torx bit with a hole in the middle).
